Common Upgrade Issues

John Barfield -

Users cannot open excel spreadsheets or word documents from explorer by directly clicking on the document icon.

Cause:

This is caused by a corrupt registry entry associated with the file type.

Solution:

Excel:

Delete or rename the "ddeexec" key under:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.12\shell\Open\

And delete or rename the "command" string under:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.12\shell\Open\command\

Word:

Delete or rename the "ddeexec" key under:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open

And delete or rename the "command" string under:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open\command

After editing the registry set the default program for file type xls and xlsx by right clicking each file type, going to properties, "open with", c:\program files\office15\root\office15\excel.exe"
